The Canadian Portal for Life Sciences Computing

Introduction

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

During the last year the GenAP team has been working hard setting up a UseGalaxy instance for the canadian researchers. It is now available at the following address: UseGalaxy Canada

As a consequence, GenAP will no longer allow the creation of new Galaxy instances. The existing ones will continue to work BUT we strongly encourage you to move over to UseGalaxy Canada as we are planning to shut down all galaxy instances in GenAP by 2025. You can find detailed instructions on how to move your histories from Galaxy in GenAP to the UseGalaxy Canada at the following address: Export/Import Galaxy Histories

Summary

The Genetics and Genomics Analysis Platform (GenAP) is a computing infrastructure and software environment for life science researchers available since 2015. GenAP aims at facilitating the work of researchers and students by offering out of the box Web applications running on an infrastructure currently leveraging Compute Canada Cloud and HPC resources.

Authentication

To use the GenAP Portal, you simply need to either:

  • Have an account at Compute Canada.
  • Have a Google account and be invited by a Compute Canada researcher through the GenAP portal.
The following tutorial contains more detailed information on this topic:

Workspaces, applications and storage

A workspace is the equivalent of a project, where you manage users and tools (applications) used to conduct your research. Each workspace is physically located at one of GenAP sites. It has an attached storage to which are linked to the GenAP application you instantiated. Applications in GenAP are in fact Web applications that are accessible through your Web browser. By the click of a button, you can instantiate applications by choosing from a list of prepackaged application types, such as Galaxy.

See the page Files Management for instructions on how to transfer and manage your files in workspaces and applications.

The following tutorials contain more detailed information on this topic:

Storage and compute resources

Any Compute Canada user can create and manage its own Workspaces, applications and members. However, they are linked to its Compute Canada sponsor (PI) storage and compute allocations in GenAP. Only the sponsor can manage the storage allocation between Workspaces. If the overall default allocations are not enough for your needs, please contact-us and we will try to accommodate and find the best solution for your specific needs.

We hope you will enjoy using GenAP. Do not hesitate to contact-us if you have any questions or comments.
